ICJ judge calls for stronger global commitment to human rights and peace

Opening the lecture, Judge Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant emphasized the key role of the ICJ in upholding international law and promoting global peace and order.

“An independent judiciary and collective global responsibility are essential to protect human rights and address emerging issues,” said Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant, a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, while speaking at CMR University’s School of Legal Studies in Bengaluru on Monday.

Opening the lecture, Judge Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant emphasized the key role of the ICJ in upholding international law and promoting global peace and order. He noted that human rights have evolved into a shared global responsibility and emphasized the importance of an independent and impartial judiciary in protecting them.

He also emphasized the growing importance of international legal mechanisms in addressing global challenges, especially climate change and environmental protection. Referring to the growing conflicts and insecurities around the world, he called on civil society to continue to be actively involved in the protection of fundamental rights and to continue to nurture the hope for a peaceful and just society.

Ashok G. Nijagannavar, member of the Karnataka Law Commission and former judge of the Karnataka High Court, highlighted the Indian Constitution’s commitment to social justice and human rights. He emphasized that systemic injustice and crimes against humanity must be approached with seriousness and collective responsibility.
