American batsman and former captain Aaron Jones has been temporarily suspended from all cricket after being charged by the International Cricket Council with multiple breaches of anti-corruption rules. The charges mainly relate to alleged match-fixing and failure to cooperate with investigators, dealing a serious blow to American cricket.
Jones was charged with five offenses under the ICC and Cricket West Indies anti-corruption codes. Most of the allegations relate to the Bim10 tournament in the 2023-24 season, which falls under the jurisdiction of the CWI. Two other charges relate to international matches governed by the ICC Code. In an official statement, the ICC confirmed that Jones had been suspended with immediate effect.
“These charges are part of a wider investigation which is likely to result in further charges against other participants in due course,” the ICC said.
“Jones has been provisionally suspended from all cricket with immediate effect and has 14 days from 28 January 2026 to respond to the charges.”
According to the ICC, Jones is charged with attempting to fix or improperly influence matches, failing to report approaches that violated anti-corruption rules, refusing to cooperate with investigators and obstructing an investigation by concealing or manipulating information. Three of the charges fall under the CWI Anti-Corruption Code, while two relate to violations of the ICC Code.
The 31-year-old was recently part of a group of 18 U.S. players training in Sri Lanka in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup T20. Now suspended, Jones is ineligible for selection and the U.S. has yet to announce its final squad for the tournament.
A big setback for American cricket
The development is a significant setback for USA Cricket, given Jones’ importance to the team in recent years. He captained the USA during the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the United States and the Caribbean Islands and was the focus of some of the team’s most memorable performances.
Jones made his international debut in 2019 and has since played 52 ODIs and 48 T20Is for the USA. He produced a match-winning 94 off 40 balls against Canada in the 2024 T20 World Cup and followed it up with an unbeaten 36 off 26 balls in a famous victory over Pakistan, an innings that brought him global attention.
Apart from international cricket, Jones has featured in several franchise leagues including the CPL, MLC and BPL. However, since April 2025, he has not represented the USA at the international level.
The ICC has made it clear that the case is not over with Jones, with further charges against other individuals possible as the investigation continues. For now, Jones’ immediate future remains uncertain, and the outcome of the trial is likely to have major implications for both his career and the USA’s World Cup preparations.
