T20 World Cup: Squads, Complete Schedule, Venues & Key Details Explained
“The ICC takes note of the statement by the Government of Pakistan regarding the decision to order its national team to participate selectively in the 2026 Men’s Under-20 World Cup,” the statement said. The ICC added that it was still awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, she emphasized that skipping the scheduled match is against the basic principles of the world event. “This position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the basic premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms according to the schedule of the event,” the ICC added. The governing body emphasized that ICC tournaments are based on honesty and integrity. “ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competitions,” it said. The ICC respects the role of governments but said the decision harms the sport and fans. “While the ICC respects the role of governments in matters of national politics, this decision is not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans around the world, including millions in Pakistan,” the statement added. The ICC also warned of long-term consequences. “The ICC hopes that the PCB will consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country,” he said, pointing out that such moves affect the entire cricket ecosystem. The council emphasized its main objective. “The ICC’s priority remains the successful execution of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” and expects all members, including the PCB, to help find a “mutually acceptable solution.”Earlier, the Pakistan government had confirmed that they would allow the team to travel to Sri Lanka, but ordered them not to play India.
