Virat Kohli has come agonizingly close to reclaiming the No.1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings. The veteran batsman is now just eight rating points behind his teammate Rohit Sharma. In the latest rankings released on Wednesday, December 10, Kohli climbed two places to No.2, pushing New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran down to No.3 and No.4.
Kohli’s rise comes after a sensational ODI series against South Africa where he was named player of the series after India secured a 2-1 victory. In three matches, he scored 302 runs at an average of 151 and a strike rate of 117.05, including successive centuries in Ranchi and Raipur. Kohli last held the top spot in the ODI rankings in March 2021, after which Pakistan’s Babar Azam replaced him at the top.
