The International Cricket Council is set to convene its upcoming quarterly meetings in India, with the CEOs’ Committee holding a virtual meeting on May 21, followed by an in-person ICC board meeting in Ahmedabad during the final weekend of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on May 30-31, sources said.
meetings, originally planned for March-April in Doha, Qatar, were postponed and relocated to India due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia. However, the relocation to Ahmedabad has thrown the nature of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) involvement into serious doubt.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is usually expected to represent Pakistan in person at the high-profile board meeting. But given the perennially tense relationship between the governments of India and Pakistan, as well as their respective cricket boards, administration sources suggest that Naqvi’s journey across the border remains highly uncertain, clouding his personal involvement considerably.
MOHSIN NAQVI IN IPL FINAL?
Adding another layer of complexity to the diplomatic puzzle, Pakistan’s sports network Geo Super, citing external reports, said Naqvi had also received an official invitation to attend the IPL finals in Ahmedabad. However, this development could not be independently verified or confirmed.
Relations between Naqvi and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have remained significantly frosty since he took over the Pakistan board. Tensions came to a head during a bizarre and unprecedented standoff at the end of the Asia Cup in Dubai, where the victorious Indian team refused to accept the winners’ trophy from Naqvi, who serves as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan’s federal interior minister. After an impasse on the podium, Naqvi left the stadium with the trophy and medals. The physical silver remains locked up in Dubai as per his instructions, with the BCCI subsequently demanding its return and escalating the matter to the ICC for resolution.
Administrative friction often played out in public rhetoric as well. Naqvi has consistently and publicly argued that The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is on its way to surpass the commercial scale and stature of the IPL—public proclamations that did little to alleviate the underlying administrative discomfort between cross-border neighbors.
With the Supreme Council meeting now scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad alongside the IPL’s flagship weekend, it is currently unknown whether Naqvi will seek the necessary government clearances to travel to India or opt for the safer alternative of attending key ICC meetings virtually from home.
