ICC fines Indian cricketer for throwing ball in ‘dangerous manner’ ahead of IND vs ENG 2nd ODI
India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has been officially warned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after he breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against England on Tuesday. The incident happened in the eighth over of England’s innings when Brar picked up the ball after his delivery and threw it at England batsman Ben Duckett. The match officials ruled that the throw was “inappropriate and dangerous”.Along with the warning, Brar received one demerit point on his disciplinary record. The charges were brought by the on-field umpires along with the third and fourth umpires under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The rule refers to “throwing the ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match”.A Level 1 offense can result in an official caution, a fine of up to 50 percent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, these points will be converted to demerit points, which may lead to a ban. Two suspension points equals a suspension for one Test or two ODIs or T20Is, whichever format comes first. Demerit points are removed from a player’s record after 24 months.Despite the disciplinary action, Brar impressed with the ball, taking two wickets as India secured a six-wicket win over England to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Thursday in the second ODI in Cardiff.“Brar admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson of the elite panel of ICC Emirates umpires and therefore there was no need for a formal hearing,” the ICC said on Thursday.
