The Minister for Agriculture and Social Care of Farmers Shivaraj Singh Chouhan announced that a special team of scientists from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) will soon adopt a study on the protection of bananas of Nanjangud Rasabale from illness.
Mr. Chouhan, who was here on Friday to participate in 110. The anniversary of the birth of Shivarathri Rajendra Swami in Suttur Mutt, visited the nearby garden farm in Chikkahalli in the Chamber of Varuna and asked the reasons for the farmers who were gradually under cultivation of popular diversity.
Among other things, Mr. Chouhan was a deputy of Mysuru Yaduveer Krishhnadatta Chamaaraaa Wadiyar and JSS Krishna Vigian Kendra.
The unique properties of Nanjangud Rasabale, including its distinctive taste and pulp, gained a geographical indication (GI) brand in 2005-06.
After he learned that farmers left the crop due to the disease transmitted by the soil, which led to a significant decrease in its cultivation, Mr. Chouhan tried to know if any research was carried out to help farmers to fight the disease.
It was emphasized that the studies were conducted and it was the soil with a source of illness. The Minister of the Union felt that a team of ICAR scientists visited the region and came up with a solution to remove contamination.
He felt that the soil without illness should be protected so that the unique variety of bananas – Nanjangud Rasabale – could be protected.
“It is important to maintain local diversity,” he said, adding that all efforts will be spent to help farmers and increase their earnings.
Meanwhile, officials of the Ministry of Horticulture in Mysur have said that Nanjangud Rasabale, which could only be grown in Nanjangud due to the GI brand, was already on the way of revival.
Thanks to the programs of the state government, which include technical interventions in the fight against disease and subsidies, the cultivation of the variety Nanjangud Rasabale, which dropped to about 30 to 50 acres about seven to eight years ago, has now reached about 150 to 200 hectares, said the ministry official.
The “organic bio-agents”, which the state government supplied to farmers, has already helped them to solve the disease, the official said.
A disease affecting the diversity of farmers on Nanjangud Rasabale was identified by an official of the Ministry of Horticulture as “Panama Wilt”.
The source of the disease has been identified for “flooding of floods”. The crop did not suffer from any diseases before channels were built in the region to irrigate agricultural countries.
The area of cultivating other GI crops in the region, such as the Mysuro Betel Leaf and Mouse Mallige, was also on the rise, added the gardening department.
