IAS officer who left finance post in London for civil service resigns after 13 years, recalls ‘unforgettable journey’ | Today’s news
IAS officer Divya Mittal, who quit her job in London to join the civil service, announced her voluntary resignation on Sunday, August 30 through a social media post. A graduate of IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore, Divya Mittal secured a job in the finance industry during the early days of her career. Dissatisfied with her professional achievements abroad, she longed to return, had the desire to serve her motherland and decided to return to India.
Divya Mittal recalls an ‘unforgettable 13-year journey’
Determined to do something for her home country, she prepared for the UPSC Civil Services exam and became a batch officer in 2013. Fondly recalling her 13-year journey in public service in a post on X, she said, “Today I voluntarily step down from an unforgettable 13-year journey by resigning from the IAS.”
She described the emptiness she felt in the UK despite her personal growth and achievements. “Growing up in a humble background, I dreamed of a good and successful life. After burning the midnight oil to study at IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore, I got a job in London. But even after achieving ‘everything’, something still felt incomplete. Being away from my country weighed on me,” wrote Divya Mittal.
Born on 23 November 1983, Divya Mittal secured 68th rank in UPSC 2012. A civil servant in Uttar Pradesh, she holds a BTech and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM).
Reflecting on her time in public service, the 42-year-old civil servant said, “I had the opportunity to do so much and I learned even more. Deoria taught me that standing up for what is right is not an option but a duty. Mirzapur taught me that ‘impossible’ is not a fact but an opinion. And sitting at Mother Vindhyavasini’s feet, I learned that true strength, confidence and people do not come from her grace, but out of trust.”
Divya Mittal played a key role in the administrative operations of Uttar Pradesh during her tenure. She held several senior positions, including the roles of District Magistrate in Deoria, Mirzapur and Sant Kabir Nagar. She also served as Special Secretary in the Department of Revenue.
Concluding the post as she recalled the heartwarming incident, she wrote, “My eyes are moist with gratitude. Only one scene lingers in them. That elderly mother from Lahuriya Dih Hill who said nothing when she first saw the water reach her village, but with trembling hands touched my head and gave her a blessing. And that position may be abandoned today, but in this dream that touch will never leave me will not leave. the soil of the earth gave me.
