Steve Harmison weighed in on Gautam Gambhir’s recent comments after India’s emphatic win in the T20 World Cup final and said it could have been a dig at Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gambhir said this right after India retained their crown he wants to shape Indian cricket in such a way that personal accolades take a back seat and the success of the team will always be at the fore.

The Indian coach specifically praised players like Sanju Samsonwho displayed an unselfish attitude by prioritizing the needs of the team in key matches rather than pursuing personal milestones. This approach attracted attention, especially when Samson played three consecutive 85+ scores in the tournament without converting them into centuries. During an appearance on talkSPORT Cricket’s YouTube channel, Harmison offered his interpretation of Gambhir’s remarks, suggesting he thought it was a dig at the star duo.
The former England pacer said he actually liked the remark from the Indian coach.
“I enjoyed that from Gambhir. I thought it was a dig at Rohit and Virat, talking about not caring about milestones and only about the team winning. I sometimes struggle with Gautam as a player and a coach. But I liked the little dig at Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” Harmison said.
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been involved in India’s recent ICC successes, including the 2024 FIFA T20 World Cup. Following this victory, the pair retired from T20 internationals, but continued to play in ODIs as they also retired from Test cricket the previous year.
Kohli and Rohit are second and third among Indian batsmen for most centuries, with a combined total of 87 ODI centuries. Kohli holds the record with 54 ODI hundreds.
GAMBHIR’S INFLUENTIAL REMINDER RO-KO RETURN?
Steve Hamison expressed curiosity about how Gautam Gambhir’s ‘milestone’ remark will affect Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma when the duo return to the Indian dressing room for ODIs.
“It will be interesting when he goes back into the 50-plus dressing room in the not-too-distant future and hears it. He’s been praised now because he’s just won a trophy,” Harmison said.
Rohit and Kohli will next be in action on India’s tour of Afghanistan in June before heading to England for an ODI series in July.
