His last appearance came in the first Test against England at Lord’s, with Williamson opting not to continue for the rest of the ongoing series, where New Zealand lead 1-0.Explaining his decision, Williamson said it wasn’t a sudden call, but something he had been considering for some time.“I’ve been thinking about it for a while, but in the last few days it’s become clear that now is the right time,” Williamson said.“I’ve always felt a strong desire and hunger for international cricket and I’m proud to have given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.“To continue with anything less would not be right and I feel fortunate to have stepped down on my own terms.“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is going. There is a huge amount of talent and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team.”“It’s a team that I love and I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to me.”
