NEW DELHI: Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has spoken candidly about the reasons behind his retirement from cricket in June 2019. Yuvraj quit international cricket and the Indian Premier League after being left out of India’s ODI World Cup squad that year. This decision marked the end of a long and emotional journey in the sport he had been involved in since childhood.

Yuvraj, now 44, said he no longer feels happy about the game. He explained that the lack of respect and support around him played a major role in his decision.“I wasn’t enjoying my game. I felt like why am I playing cricket if I don’t enjoy it? I didn’t feel supported. I didn’t feel respected. And I felt why do I have to do this if I don’t have this? Why do I stick with something I don’t enjoy? Why do I have to play? And prove what hurt me more, mentally or physically. I can’t do that. I stopped, I was myself again,” Yuvraj shared during a recent podcast with ex Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.Yuvraj also looked back at an earlier phase in his life when there were doubts about his talent.“Looking back now, I don’t think he had time to really look at me. He was nice to my dad. Then of course he was playing for India at the time, so he probably would have said that. I was 13-14 at the time, just making up the sport. I don’t take it personally, but my father did,” he said.
