Russia accused the United States of exerting pressure on India and killed the country for issuing a “threat” over the business relations of the new Delhi with the Kremlin.
He stated that such pressure was illegal and the US is not entitled to choose business partners for countries.
“We hear many statements that are in fact threats, trying to force countries to reduce business relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements as legal,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“We believe that countries should have and have the right to choose their own business partners, partners for business and economic cooperation and choose for forms of business and economic cooperation for themselves in the interest of a specific country,” he added.
US President Donald Trump said he was depositing new sanctions on Russia and countries that have been buying energy exports from Friday if President Vladimir Putin does not end his war with Ukraine, which has been running since 2022.
“India not only buys a huge amount of Russian oil, but for most of the purchased oils they sell it in the open market with large profits,” Trump wrote on Monday on social media. “They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are killed by a Russian war machine. For this reason, I will basically increase the tariff paid by India to the US.”
India is pushing back on the threat of Trump
On Monday, the Ministry of the External Affairs (MEA) intervened after Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs in India over her trade in Russia and call it “unfounded and disproportionate”.
“India began to import from Russia because traditional reserves were diverted to Europe after the outbreak. At that time, the United States actively supported such imports of India to strengthen the stability of global energy markets,” Mea said.
The European-Russian trade includes not only energy but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machines and transport equipment, she said.
“As far as the United States is concerned, it continues to import from Russian hexafluoride from Russian uranium for its nuclear industry, Palladium for its industry EV, fertilizers and chemicals,” Mea said on Monday.
