Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda Central Jail is setting up a gender-neutral cell for transgender inmates
Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda Central Jail has set up a separate gender-neutral cell for people with different gender identities and expressions following the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Jail authorities have also allowed affirmative clothing for those housed in the facility, according to a compliance report submitted to the NHRC.
The move followed a visit to the prison on October 8 by a special observer from the Commission, which oversees issues related to transgender people and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. During the visit, the implementation of recommendations issued by the NHRC and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure the welfare of transgender persons in jail was highlighted.
In his report to the Commission, the Superintendent of the Central Jail, Hyderabad, confirmed that the recommendation to establish a gender-neutral cell had been implemented. Prison authorities have also confirmed permission for positive clothing for inmates at the facility.
The NHRC said the initiative aims to protect the dignity and human rights of persons with diverse gender identities and expressions in correctional facilities.
