When it comes to traffic accidents in Hyderabad, the numbers are not completely added up. What suggests a report by the National Office for Crime records (NCRB) and what two very different stories record.
According to NCRB 2023, Hyderabad recorded 2,943 accidents and 335 deaths. However, combined figures from the city’s three-komise are painting a much alarming figure-9 101 accidents and 1,779 deaths in the same year.
The anomaly becomes more obvious when considering the spread of three commissioners. Hyderabad covers about 650 km2 km, Cyberabad stretches to 3,679.7 km and Rachakonda is the largest of approximately 5 121 km 2 km. In these areas, Rachakonda recorded the most accidents in 2023 at 3,321, followed by Cyberabad (3,143), while Hyderabad represented 2,637 cases.
As the Hyderabad has increased over the years, it has led to insufficient reports in national statistics where old geographical jurisdiction is being considered. In 2022, the municipal police recorded 8,599 accidents across three commissioners, which is more than 241% higher than the NCRB number 2 516.
In 2021, while NCRB inserted the sum of “Hyderabad” in 2,273 cases, the local figure was 8,816. Even in 2019 and 2020, when the accidents were 7,072 and 8,799, according to police data, NCRB numbers were much lower to 2,064 and 2,900.
At the national level Hyderabad is still among the worst cities. With 2,516 cases in the NCRB 2023 list, he ranked fifth among 53 mega cities, behind Delhi (5 715), Bengaluru (4,980), Chennai (3,653) and Indore (3,566). Hyderabad represented 4.21% of 69,910 road accidents reported in these city centers.
Human costs of these accidents are steep. In 2023, up to 2,596 people were injured and killed 335.
According to the NCRB, the evening hours proved to be the most dangerous, with 474 accidents announced between 18:00 and 21:00, followed by 435 cases in the afternoon (12:00 to 15:00) and 427 between 15:00 and 18:00 were held on city roads, where 2,418 left 2,139 injured and 254 dead. The national highways recorded 405 cases (344 injured, 59 dead) and the state highway of 120 cases (113 injured, 22 dead).
In the accidents the accidents dominated two wheels and represented 2,247 cases that caused 260 deaths. Followed by SUVs, cars and tricycles, each noticing 109 accidents with 11 and 10 deaths.
On a larger scale, traffic accidents accounted for 97.3% of total traffic accidents in Indian 53 mega cities, which, according to NCRB, include traffic accidents, railway accidents and accidents at the railway crossing. Delhi itself contributed 8.2%of cases, Bengaluru 7.1%and Chennai 5.2%. Delhi also recorded the highest number of road accident deaths per 1,457, followed by Bengaluru with 915.
The causes are also called. In 53 cities it was an excessive speed of more than half of deaths in 2023 and demanded 8,635 lives or 53.4% of a total of 16,180 deaths. Dangerous or careless proceedings, including overtaking, accounted for another 27.6% (4,471 deaths). Driving or drugs caused 436 deaths, 2.7% of the total, with such cases led by Kanpur.
