Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad successfully treated a 41-year-old woman with a rare and potentially life-threatening complication caused by a giant uterine fibroid.
A patient from Bhubaneswar was admitted with severe abdominal pain and was found to be severely anemic. An imaging scan revealed a 19cm fibroid and uterine torsion, an unusual condition where the uterus twists on support structures. Surgeons performed an emergency hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and appendectomy.
The procedure was complicated by internal bleeding and distorted anatomy. The patient received three units of packed red blood cells and recovered well before being discharged in stable condition.
The operation was performed by Jyoti Kankanala, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Citizens Specialty Hospital, along with the supporting surgical team of Pratap Varma, Vani and Anesthesiologist Madhukar Goud.
