(Bloomberg) – The wind of Hurricane Erina fell on Sunday as he fluctuated to the west, brought heavy rain through the virgin islands and Puerto Rico before turning north and probably renewed in the coming days.
The storm, the first hurricane of the 2025 season, is expected to pass at the end of this week between Outer Banks and Bermuda in North Carolina.
About 170 miles (275 kilometers) northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Erin’s highest winds blow at 125 million speeds, making it a hurricane category 3 on a five-speed Saffir-Simpson scale, said the US National Hurricane Center at 8:00 EDT.
Erin’s winds increased rapidly on Saturday to reach 160 million / h, making it a storm on a scale of 5 and one of the first examples of a powerful system that appears in the Atlantic. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl became the earliest storm to achieve the highest intensity during the six -month Atlantic season.
In addition to the wind speeds that are expected to increase again and reach 145 mph the following day, Erin will swell in size.
“The expanding wind field will lead to the harsh conditions of the ocean in most western Atlantic,” wrote Senior Hurricane John Cangialosi in the forecast of the Center. “Given the modifications of the trail and the growing size, the Bahamas of the tropical storm warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and for the southeast Bahamas tropical storms.”
While Erin barely grazing Puerto Rico and the virgin islands, she still knocked out many people. About 10% of Puerto Rica was without electricity overnight, Luma Energy informed, and crews on the American Virgin Islands worked on Sunday to restore energy.
If Erin holds on his forecast track, he will avoid a direct strike on one of the islands in the area or on the east coast of the US. It is expected to follow a shallow C -shaped arch through the western Atlantic, which passes between North Carolina and Bermuda overnight on Wednesday to Thursday.
In addition to Erin, another tropical wave that carries tracking, moves from Africa to the Atlantic, said Dan Pydynowski, a meteorologist with Commercial Porecaster Accuweather Inc.
The patch of storms and showers is currently near the African coast of Cabo Verde and moves west through the Atlantic, with 20% chances to become a storm in the next week.
This part of the ocean, between the Caribbean and Africa, is known as the main development area for predictions, and there have been formed some of the deadliest and harmful storms of history. It is also a part of the ocean that becomes particularly active between mid -August and in the end of September.
“It’s the season, later part of August,” Pydynowski said. “We’ll have to watch it. We’re approaching the top of the hurricane season quickly.”
