The Humane Animal Society (HAS) in association with HCL Foundation and Mission Rabies India started revaccination in eight regions of Coimbatore district namely Madukkarai, Arasipalayam, Nachipalayam, Vazhukkupparai, Malumachampatti, Othakkalmandapam, Seerapalayam and Karumathampatti from December 8 to December 18.
The success of last year’s campaign at the same time in the same areas, where more than 5,000 dogs were vaccinated in seven days, was the main inspiration to revaccinate in the same areas this year, as annual revaccination is key to eliminating the deadly disease. Since the launch of the campaign on December 10, more than 3,000 dogs have already been vaccinated. The campaign expects to breed 6,000 dogs by December 18.
The program involves the deployment of a dedicated Rabies Response Team (RRT) trained to respond quickly to community calls. This is in addition to the ongoing dog vaccination campaigns and public awareness events being carried out across the district at this time.
The launch was attended by representatives of the District Administration, HCL Foundation, Mission Rabies and Humane Animal Society along with several local partners and volunteers who together affirmed their commitment to strengthen Coimbatore’s fight against rabies through thorough surveillance, vaccination and community awareness. The initiative has been recognized as a true ‘One Health’ effort, bringing together human and animal health systems with the common goal of making Coimbatore a rabies-free district.
