Specialist surgeons at HCG Suchirayu Hospital in Hubballi performed an advanced surgery to treat a 48-year-old patient who had a narrowed trachea resulting in severe breathing problems.
Consultant interventional pulmonologist Dr. Speaking to press in Hubballi on June 30, Govind Desai said that they performed an advanced airway intervention, electrosurgery with balloon bronchoplasty, on a patient suffering from post-intubation tracheal stenosis, a serious condition where the trachea narrows significantly after prolonged intubation, leading to severe breathing difficulties.
He said the patient from Hubballi had severe breathing problems. A thorough diagnosis revealed that he suffered from post-intubation tracheal stenosis, a condition that developed after prolonged intubation and resulted in significant narrowing of the trachea.
Dr. Desai said that with surgery, the patient’s airway was restored using a minimally invasive bronchoscopic approach. The intervention included bronchoscopic identification of the narrowed tracheal segment, controlled electrosurgical radial incisions to release scar tissue causing airway obstruction, followed by balloon bronchoplasty to dilate the narrowed airways and restore normal airflow. The patient recovered after the procedure. He was released the next day in stable condition with significant relief from his symptoms, the doctor said.
HCG Hospital Chief Operating Officer Suchirayu said the successful management of this complex respiratory condition reflects the hospital’s continued focus on making advanced medical expertise and technology available to patients in North Karnataka.
