How Shubman Gill became India’s new Test machine: Ashwin reveals technical tweak

R Ashwin has revealed the technique Shubman Gill used on his bat that allowed India’s Test captain to become a run machine in the format. Gill has been in sensational form since taking over the captaincy in the longest format of the game. After taking over the role and switching to No.4, Gill scored 950 runs in eight matches, including five hundreds and one fifty.

Four of his centuries came during the tour of Englandwhere he scored 754 runs in five matches. In an interview with JioStar, Ashwin praised Gill’s temperament and his ability to handle the captain’s pressure with maturity.

“Shubman Gill had a fantastic series in England. Once he became captain, he went there and performed, both with the bat and with his leadership. He scored runs in difficult conditions and handled the pressure of captaincy with maturity. It showed his class and ability to bat long,” Ashwin said.

The former spinner said Gill has improved his batting technique and moved the bat closer to his pads, making him solid against the moving ball. Ashwin said that while the Indian skipper is yet to be prolific at home, he expects this adjustment to help the star batsman fire up all guns at home.

“He’s worked hard on his technique, especially keeping the bat close to the pads, which has helped him reduce the gap between the bat and the pad, making him more solid against the moving ball.”

“Yes, he is yet to fire with the bat at home as captain, but with this change in his batting technique, I expect him to come out all guns blazing at home as well. His success in Test cricket will play a big role in redefining the Indian Test team. He is the type of player who can lead the batting line-up for years to come,” Ashwin said.

Gill played 20 matches for India and scored 1373 runs at an average of 45.76.
