How much did this man cost to quit government job for IIM Ahmedabad ₹74 lakh | Today’s news

Leaving a civil service position in India is often considered a risky decision given the stability, job security and benefits that such roles offer. But one former government official says he made the leap willingly — and that it came with a price 74 million.

In a video shared on Instagram, Amit Soni, who previously served as SSB Assistant Commandant on the Indo-Nepal border, revealed that quitting his government job to pursue a one-year postgraduate program for executives (PGPX) at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad cost him almost 74 million.

Sharing the video, Soni wrote, “ 74 million. That’s what got me fired from my civil service job – the same day I got into IIM Ahmedabad.”

He went on to explain how he arrived at that figure, breaking down both the direct expenses and the indirect financial costs of stepping away from a secure government career.

How The 74 Lakh value adds up

According to Soni, the total includes the program fee at IIM Ahmedabad, international module costs, living expenses, the resignation bond he had to pay after quitting his government job and what he described as the “opportunity cost” of giving up a year’s salary and employee benefits.

He said tuition fees for the PGPX program remained flat 37.10 crores.

In addition, he estimated the cost 4.5,000 crore for International Immersion Program and more 2.5 million for living expenses during the academic year.

Soni further revealed that resigning from his government post required him to pay a bond of Rs 9.80 crores.

The biggest indirect costs, he said, came from giving up annual salary and employee benefits, which he estimated at 20 lakhs.

Despite the significant financial commitment, Soni said he never doubted his decision.

He wrote that he had “no second thoughts” and no backup plan before resigning from his government post.

“Just a belief,” he wrote in the post, before adding: “Worth it? Absolutely.”

In the next part of the post, he reflected on why he believes the decision was worth it despite the costs involved.

“Because some investments aren’t measured in millions — they’re measured by who you become on the other side. Uniform for the boardroom. Service for strategy. This is just chapter two,” he said.

Choosing growth over comfort

Civil service jobs in India continue to be among the most sought-after careers in the country due to its reputation for job security, predictable income, and long-term benefits. Every year, thousands of candidates apply for a limited number of vacancies across various departments and services.

In this context, Soni’s decision to resign from his position as Assistant Commandant and enroll at IIM Ahmedabad has attracted attention on social media.

He previously discussed this choice in another video, explaining that he wanted to prioritize “growth” over “comfort.”

His latest Instagram post sparked online conversations about career transitions, the financial cost of college education, and the value professionals place on long-term career aspirations over immediate financial security.
