The Indian passport has been ranked 125th in the Global Passport Index 2026 released by consultancy Global Citizen Solutions (GCS) on 30 June.

According to the report, the Indian passport has dropped by one position compared to the previous year. It retained its 127th place on the list from 2021 to 2024, the Global Passport Index 2026 revealed.

The Henley Passport Index, another worldwide ranking of passports, ranked the Indian passport at 80th, down from 85th in 2025.

How friendly is the Indian passport?

As of now, an Indian passport provides visa-free access to 26 countries. In addition, Indian passport holders have visa-free and visa-free access to countries such as Bhutan, Jamaica, Macau, Nepal, Palestine, Tunisia, Angola and Barbados, allowing almost instant travel around the world.

Increased Mobility Index: India ranks 136th

India is ranked 136th in the Enhanced Mobility Index, down one position from last year’s ranking.

This category, which accounts for 50 percent of the total score, measures the travel benefits the passport offers. It also takes into account the degree of “attractiveness” of the destination country based on its quality of life.

Quality of Life Index: India ranks 118th

The Indian passport secured 118th place in the Quality of Life Index, improving 11 positions from last year’s 129th place.

The Quality of Life Index covers six main components related to the quality of life in a country. Other areas such as health, education and personal safety were also considered.

However, it was considered that they are already covered by selected indicators (such as the Sustainable Development Goals) or that there are limited reliable sources of information. The quality of life index is worth 25% of the total calculation.

Investment Index: India is ranked 94th

India was ranked 94th in the investment index, moving up three places from 97th in the previous edition.

The investment index, which is worth 25% of the total calculation, is used to provide a general assessment of the economy as an option for investment and other business decisions.

Prosperous nations with dynamic economies are preferred, taking into account the level of personal taxation.
