How a Kerala teacher’s ‘portable chemistry lab’ sparks students’ interest in experiments

Imagine a science teacher holding two pieces of chalk to explain a chemical reaction in a middle school classroom. As the chalk tilts slowly and slightly in one hand while the other is held firmly, he says, “Suppose these are two test tubes, and from one of them we pour chemicals into the other…”

Few students would understand the ‘chemistry’ behind it even after such classroom experience, believes Abhilash Thiruvoth, chemistry teacher at the vocational higher secondary wing of the Government Vocational College for Girls, Nadakkavu, Kozhikode, Keralam.
