Wild elephants wandered into the Shedukudy tribal settlement of Edamalakkudy in Idukki on Monday evening, damaging three houses and creating panic among the residents.
According to locals, a herd of wild elephants attacked the under-construction houses of the natives in the settlement around 1:00 AM. Natives, including children, were sleeping in the houses during the incident. No one is hurt.
“Edamalakkudy village officer Syam G. Nath narrowly escaped the elephants. Hearing some noise, he went to enquire, got stuck in front of the animals and was rescued by the forest department. An eight-member team of the department is camping in the area to drive away the elephants from human settlements,” Munnar gunner S. Biju said. Food stored in houses may have attracted them to the settlement, he added.
Two days ago, a wild elephant strayed into the Anganwadi in Edamalakkudy and ate the rice and other food stored there. Tusker destroyed the wall and window of the building. Anganwadi has been designated as polling station 13 of Edamalakkudy panchayat for local body elections.
A village official said the building would be renovated before the election.
