New Home Minister Priyank Kharge said he will next week review the functioning of the Information Disturbance Unit (IDTU), which was launched on a pilot basis to check hate speech and the spread of misinformation on social media. He was speaking to media persons after presiding over an appraisal meeting of the Karnataka State Police on Friday.
Sources said Bengaluru’s traffic woes figured prominently in the meeting. He reportedly said he would call another meeting to seek a solution to the traffic mess on the Outer Ring Road. Incidentally, Mr. Kharge also heads the Information Technology and Biotechnology department. Sources said traffic snarls caused by signal-free corridors created for VIP movement were also discussed. Mr. Kharge told reporters after the meeting that they will explore whether measures like signal synchronization can help avoid such situations.
Mr. Kharge also said that they will engage with citizens, think tanks and other organizations to address the city’s traffic problems. He told reporters that he had gathered information about the department, but it would take several more days to fully understand how it works.
