Hockey: Manpreet Singh equals Dilip Tirkey’s record 412 caps as India lose 2-3 to Netherlands in Pro League
Manpreet Singh equaled former India captain Dilip Tirkey’s record of 412 international appearances on Sunday, but the milestone came in a 2-3 defeat to the Netherlands in the FIH Men’s Pro League.The veteran midfielder achieved the milestone during India’s match against the hosts and became only the second Indian men’s hockey player to play 412 international matches. He is also the only active player with over 400 senior international caps.The Netherlands took an early lead in the third minute through Miles Bukkens. India responded six minutes later when Dilpreet Singh found the net to make it 1-1.Koen Bijen restored the lead for the Dutch in the 23rd minute but India fought back again as Sukhjeet Singh scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game.However, Timjen Reyenga scored in the 40th minute to give the Netherlands the lead for the third time and India were unable to find another equaliser.The defeat marred what was otherwise a momentous day for Manpreet, who now shares India’s record for most international appearances with Dilip Tirkey.Congratulating Manpreet on his achievement, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, “Congratulations to Manpreet for achieving this major milestone, which is a remarkable achievement and reflects his determination, determination and consistency over the years.“I wish him all the best for the upcoming matches and hope to see him play on many more occasions.
