The Dedicated Bus Lanes or Bus Rapid Transit System is one of several proposals for public transport in the preparation of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s (HMDA) 2050 Master Plan.
The length of potential road corridors identified for BRTS is about 29 kilometers by 2040, which can be further expanded to 48 kilometers by 2050, as per the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, the details of which were shared during a workshop on Thursday.
HMDA has commissioned three major technical studies, namely the Economic Development Plan, the Comprehensive Mobility Plan and the Blue and Green Infrastructure Plan, as part of the exercise to prepare a master plan for the area up to the county circuit, covering nearly 10,500 square kilometers.
At the workshop, a representative of LEA Associates presented the CMP proposals, which include components such as Metro Rail, MMTS network and others.
The cumulative length of the metro rail network for the horizons of 2030, 2040 and 2050 is projected at 258.4 km, 534.1 km and 556.6 km, compared to the current length of approximately 70 kilometres.
The length of the cumulative additional MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) network has increased to 202 km by 2030, to 255.6 km by 2040 and to 336.4 km by 2050.
The road network, which includes higher order road transport, arterials, sub-arterial corridors greater than 60 feet wide and collector roads, is proposed to be 223 km by 2030, 2,640 km by 2040 and 2,847 km by 2050. It will complement the existing road network. In terms of driving kilometres, it is proposed to reach 19,352 driving kilometers by 2050.
A total of 75 graders (overpasses/underpasses/bridges), 120 feet of flyovers or skywalks, 34 roads under bridges or roads over bridges, eight elevated corridors, and seven intercity or interstate bus/freight terminals have been proposed for the 2050 horizon.
