The historian succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the leg by the police when he allegedly tried to escape by assault in Rampur (PA) village, Sindgi taluk village of Vijayapura district died on Saturday.
The historian, identified as Younus Iqlas Patel, 30, of Devangaon in Vijayapur, who was wanted by the police in robbery and murder cases, allegedly robbed a man of ₹25,000 at knifepoint and fled with the victim’s two-wheeler on Friday.
The Gandhi Chowki station police registered a case and launched a search for him. A team of police personnel led by an inspector tracked him down in Rampur (PA) village to nab him.
“When our police team caught him, the accused assaulted the policemen and injured them. As a warning, Police Inspector Pradeep Talakeri fired two shots in the air. Instead of surrendering, the accused rushed towards the inspector threateningly. The inspector stumbled, fell and accidentally shot the accused. The bullet in the hospital immediately hit him in the leg. First aid, doctors gave him they advised that he should be taken to the district hospital and hence he was immediately taken to the district hospital in Vijayapur. When they reached the hospital, doctors who examined him said he had breathed his last,” Vijayapura District Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbaragi told The Hindu.
The accused had two cases of murder and various cases of attempted murder, robbery and theft against him.
Mr Nimbaragi said the cause of death would be known after the post-mortem. Further investigation of the case is ongoing.
