Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tendered his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday (6 May 2026), paving the way for the formation of a new government.
The governor accepted Mr. Sarma’s request to dissolve the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly and asked him to continue as caretaker chief minister till the swearing-in ceremony.
After meeting the governor, Mr. Sarma told reporters that the new ministry would be sworn in after May 11, when the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature is elected.
On Tuesday (May 5, 2026), the BJP Parliamentary Board appointed Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the central observer and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as co-observer for the Assam BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) leader election.
“The BJPLP meeting will be held in the presence of Nadda-ji and Saini-ji. After electing the leader, we will hold an NDA (National Democratic Alliance) meeting for a motion to support the BJPLP leader,” Sarma said.
He said the BJPLP meeting will be held on or before May 11. “We will know the date from Nadda-ji’s office tomorrow (Thursday, May 7),” he added.
A state BJP spokesperson said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
The NDA swept the single-phase polls on April 9, winning 102 of the 126 seats. The BJP won 82 seats, two short of a two-thirds majority, while allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.
The remaining 24 seats were shared by the Congress (19), its regional ally Raijor Dal (2), Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (2) and the All India Trinamool Congress (1).
