Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday (September 8, 2025) declared Himachal as a “fully literate state” on the occasion of an international literary day.
The announcement was made in Shimle at an event organized by the School Education Directorate.
Journey from 7% to 99.30%
The main minister said Himachal Pradesh achieved this goal before the planned time frame and added that the journey from a minimal literacy rate of approximately 7% to full literacy was full of challenges, yet the state continued to move forward to provide quality education. He emphasized the importance of continuous reforms in accordance with modern requirements.
Mr. Sukhu said that the level of literacy in Himachal Pradesh reached 99.30%, which is higher than the national scale of 95%, while the state assessment in the country in terms of students’ ratio.
State Minister of Education Rohit Thakur said the day would be commemorated as a gold chapter in Himachal Pradesh history. “After independence, the state was one of the lowest countries in terms of literacy. With a move to improve the quality of education, the governing governments worked hard, and today Himachal has reached the highest position in India,” he said, adding that the level of premature ending has now become almost zero.
The Minister of Education of the Union Sanjay Kumar, in the video report, congratulated Himachal Pradesh to this success and emphasized the importance of providing education based on skills newly literately.
