Former American First Lady Hillary Clinton said on Friday, August 15 that she would nominate Trump, her rival in the presidential election in 2016, for the Nobel Peace Prize, if she could ensure the successful end of the Russian-Acraina conflict.
Her statement came before the Trump summit with a high share with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Alaska, where the discussion was expected to achieve an agreement to end the conflict but failed. When she talked about the Russian leader, she stressed that Trump should be aware of meeting the “opponent”.
“If Donald Trump negotiates the end of the Putin War in Ukraine without having to advance the territory, I nominate him at the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump should now know that he had not met the United States today.
“Very nice. If she said it, it’s very nice. Actually, I really appreciate it. I don’t want to get involved in such things,” Trump on her notes.
Trump defeated Clinton in 2016 US presidential elections. During the campaign, she criticized the Republican for his admiration Putin before the invasion of Ukraine. “It praises dictators like Vladimir Putin and chooses to fight our friends,” she said.
Russia-Ukraine conflict
Trump committed himself to “quickly end the Ukrainian war”, while Putin promotes the recognition of Russian territorial gains and the abolition of Western sanctions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelskyy rejected any territorial concessions and was not invited to the summit.
“We had an extremely productive meeting and many points were agreed, there were only very little left. We did not get there, but we have a very good chance to get there,” Trump said.
Putin, which was isolated by the Western Allies since the start of the invasion of Ukraine at the beginning of 2022, was welcomed to the USA at the meeting. He thanked Trump for hosting as laughing that their next meeting could take place in Moscow.
