Jantar Mantar protest site video not for snooping: SG Tushar Mehta to Delhi HC

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Delhi High Court that the video recording of the protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged examination irregularities was not for “snooping” but for law and order purposes.

A senior law officer told Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia that protests against Jantar Mantar are always videotaped.

The bench was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh against the Center and the Delhi Police alleging “continuous, indiscriminate and disruptive surveillance” at the Jantar Mantar protest.

“There is one protest or the other at Jantar Mantar, (and) it is always recorded… It is only for law, order and security. There is no snooping. There is no surveillance,” said Mr Mehta, who appeared in court for the authorities.

“In fact hundreds of people are seen daily in this protest making videos and making reels and making them viral,” he added.

The bench posted the PIL for hearing on Tuesday and asked Mr. Mehta to inform whether the police had formulated any guidelines to regulate the protests as directed by the Supreme Court in the judgment.
