Congress leader KC Venugopal on Thursday said that the All India Congress Committee will stand by the action taken by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committees in connection with the controversy surrounding Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.
Speaking to reporters here, he reiterated that the Congress has already clarified its stand on the issue. Mr. Venugopal said that no one in the party was prevented from pursuing any legal remedies.
“We want an impartial process. Whenever allegations have been made against a public representative, it has been Congress that has taken exemplary action. The email complaint was forwarded directly to the KPCC president, who then forwarded it to the state police chief. We were not trying to protect anyone,” he said.
He accused the CPI(M) of trying to divert attention from election-related issues by summarizing the allegations. “The CPI(M) leaders were arrested in the Sabarimala gold heist case. The Congress has never had a tradition of protecting the culprits,” he said. As for Mr. Mamkootathil continuing as an MLA, he said the onus was on the legislator himself.
A senior Congress official also alleged that there was a hidden understanding between the CPI(M) and the Bharatiya Janata Party over national policies, including the PM SHRI scheme and the Labor Code.
Reacting to the controversy surrounding CPI(M) MP John Brittas, he said the Union Education Minister said that Mr. Brittas served as a liaison between the Center and the Kerala government on matters related to PM SHRI. “If Mr. Brittas had no involvement as an intermediary, is he ready to issue a notice against the minister for violating his privileges,” asked Mr. Venugopal.
