The entire coastal belt of Tirupati district received more rainfall compared to inland areas due to the effect of Cyclone Montha on Tuesday. While the entire district received 4.5 mm on Monday, heavy rains lashed the coastal mandals of Ozili, Doravari Satram, Vakadu, Kota, Satyavedu, Sullurpeta, Gudur and Chittamur.
Gudur received the highest rainfall of 63.6 mm till 6 pm on Tuesday, followed by Chillakur (47), Kota (46.4), Ozili (45) and Vakadu (44). Meanwhile, Pakala, farthest from the coast, received at least 8 mm, followed by Chandragiri (11) and Pichatur (11.2) and Chinnagottigallu (11.8).
Collector S. Venkateswar, District Special Officer Arun Babu and Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu visited the coastal areas to monitor the situation. The team checked flooded crops, overflowing dams, water bodies up to the edge and high tides at Thupilipalem Beach.
Mr. Venkateswar appealed to the public not to walk on the embankment when it overflowed or go near the water reservoirs that might suffer a breach, recalling the calamities witnessed in the region in the past.
Revenue and police teams were parked at the water bodies while sandbags were arranged as a backup measure in case the dams of the reservoirs were breached.
“The government is giving top priority to prevent loss of life and minimize loss of property due to the cyclone and the administration is on high alert,” Venkateswar informed the media.
Following the fake alerts and reports circulating on social media, the collector warned netizens not to spread panic and in the same vein urged the public to trust only official information released by the government.
Special Officer Arun Babu expressed hope that the state would stand firm and recover in such a time. He specifically warned irrigation officials to monitor water levels in tanks and reservoirs and take measures to prevent violations.
Mr. Subbarayudu asked the public to stay inside and come out only in case of emergency. Divisional Revenue Director (Srikalahasti) Bhanuprakash Reddy, Chief Engineer (Irrigation) Radha Krishna and other officials were present.
