Heavy rains due to cyclonic storm Montha caused severe disruption to normal life in Palnadu district on Wednesday (October 29), with major waterlogging reported at several places.
APSRTC services to all villages are likely to resume by Thursday morning. In some areas, authorities have either stopped or diverted heavy vehicles.
One of the worst-hit areas was near the underpass on the National Highway 16 bypass at Thimmapuram in Edlapadu Mandal, where waterlogging brought traffic to a standstill and posed a risk to the surrounding agricultural fields.
District Collector Kritika Shukla inspected the spot and directed the officials to drain the standing water. She said flood water should not reach nearby agricultural fields.
Similar problems were reported in Chilakaluripet. The Collector, accompanied by MLA Prattipati Pullarao, inspected the site and directed civic and revenue officials to take remedial action.
In Nuzendla mandal, the Gundlakamma vagu (rainwater drain) overflowed in Inavolu village and in Parigaticherla in Rompicherla mandal, water overflowing from reservoirs flooded roads.
On the Muttanapalli–Munumaka rail road, fallen trees blocking the flow of water were removed using cranes, restoring the natural flow. Water stagnation was removed in Mulakalur SC Colony of Narasaraopet mandal where water was pumped into the main canal.
The Collector inspected the accumulation of rainwater near the Kodela Siva Prasada Rao Stadium Bridge in Narasaraopet and ordered immediate rescue operations. She reviewed the flow conditions at the Barampeta–Sakiralamatta bypass.
Fallen trees were removed
Across the district, disaster management teams and municipal teams were removing fallen trees and clearing obstructions. At Eepur mandal, a fallen tamarind blocking the R&B road was removed. Similar operations were carried out between Pedakurapadu and Thallur, Nakarikallu–Gurazala road and Eepuru–Karampudi stretch.
In Veldurti mandal, Penta Thanda in Vajralapad panchayat was affected by floods from where 40 families comprising 70 people were shifted to ZP High School in Sirigiripad. A large tree that fell on the Achampet road near a petrol tank has been cleared, though traffic remained unaffected.
At Mannesultanpalem, Bellamkonda mandal, water from nearby fields flooded the road. On the Turakapalem–Ravipadu road in Nakarikallu mandal, officials posted VROs and VRAs to restrict public movement as floodwater overflowed the embankment.
In Chilakaluripet, branches of a tree leaning dangerously over a house in Subbaiah Thota were removed.
In Rudravaram village of Achampet mandal, 23 migrant laborers from Kurnool were shifted to a relief camp set up at the local Mandal Parishad primary school. Similarly, in Alavala village of Rompicherla mandal, 13 migrant workers have been shifted to a relief centre.
Across the district, emergency teams from revenue, R&B, municipal and police departments are working in coordination to ensure public safety, said Collector Kritika Shukla, who has been conducting inspections in many flood-hit mandals.
