Heavy rain likely in parts of North India, Northeast and South during the next week | Today’s news
Several parts of the country are likely to see rain in the coming week, with isolated heavy to very heavy showers forecast in some parts of northwest India, while rain activity is expected to increase in the northeast and south of the peninsula, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In northwestern India, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Uttarakhand on September 28. Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over West Uttar Pradesh, while East Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh may experience isolated heavy rains. Heavy rainfall is also predicted over Uttarakhand on September 28.
Occasional rains are expected in central India till early October. Chhattisgarh may witness isolated to scattered showers till October 3, while Vidarbha is likely to experience rainfall till October 2.

The east remains wet
In eastern India, relatively widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between September 28 and 29. Isolated to scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over the islands during September 30 to October 3.
Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may experience isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning during September 27 to October 3. Bihar is likely to experience similar conditions during September 28 to October 1.
Northeast is expected to remain wet, with moderate to widespread rainfall forecast over Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states on September 30. Heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during September 29-30.

Recent downpour
In West India, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra may receive rain till October 3. Scattered showers are also expected over the southern peninsula, while Kerala and coastal Karnataka are likely to experience more widespread rainfall from late September to early October.
Meanwhile, exceptionally heavy rainfall of over 30 cm was recorded at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am on Sunday, while parts of Uttarakhand, western Uttar Pradesh and Bihar received very heavy rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today.
Very heavy rainfall in the range of 12-20 cm was recorded over Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh also recorded heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm during this period.

The monsoon is receding
The heavy downpours come as the Southwest Monsoon continues to retreat from parts of northwest India. It has withdrawn from most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, entire Delhi and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, the IMD said today.
The withdrawal line continues through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya.
The southwest monsoon season brought cumulative rainfall of 749.2 mm from 1 June to 26 September, 12% below normal of 853.4 mm.
