Heavy rains lashed various parts of Cuddalore district on Tuesday under the influence of a well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal, disrupting the normal life of residents.
Official sources said the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai has issued a red alert for Cuddalore district till 8.30 am on Wednesday.
According to the RMC, a well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-northwest on Tuesday and consolidate into a depression over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by Wednesday afternoon.
Heavy rain on Monday night and Tuesday inundated large areas of paddy crops in several villages in the tail-end delta region of Cuddalore district.
Annamalai nagar received a maximum of 99 PM of rain during the 24-hour period that ended at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Walk Chidambaram recorded 97.3 PM. Rainfalll Recorded in other areas in cuddalore district are: 66.6 mm, bhuvanagir 51 mm, cuddalore 39.4 mm and srimushnam 39.2 mm.
The rains have inundated large areas of paddy fields in more than 20 villages in Keerapalayam block. Authorities are working to pump out the standing water to prevent further crop damage.
Heavy rains also filled the Sivaganga tank at the Sri Natarajar Temple in Chidambaram.
Meanwhile, the Cuddalore district administration has issued an advisory to the public in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall in Cuddalore district.
In the meeting, Sibi Collector Adhithya Senthil Kumar appealed to people not to venture near rivers and other water bodies. People must refrain from entering water bodies and do not take livestock for bathing. The administration also ordered people living in shacks, dilapidated buildings and low-lying areas to move to safer places.
