Heart for India! Nirupama Devi failed to finish in the women’s 63kg weightlifting final

Glasgow: Nirupama Devi from India (PTI Photo/Ravi Choudhary) India’s Nirupama Devi saw her Commonwealth Games medal hopes end in heartbreak after she failed to register in the women’s 63kg weightlifting event on Tuesday. The Commonwealth Championships silver medalist looked good in contention after the catch but suffered a dramatic collapse in the clean and jerk as she failed all three of her attempts to record a Did Not Finish (DNF).

A promising start ends in disappointment

Nirupama started the competition by unsuccessfully lifting 93 kg in the clean and jerk before recovering to clear the same weight in her second attempt. She then attempted 95kg but was unable to complete the lift and finished the opening event with a best of 93kg. Her effort placed her in fifth place after the snatch, keeping her firmly in the medal race with a clean and jerk yet to come. The 22-year-old, who won silver at the 2025 Commonwealth Championships with a combined lift of 217kg (91kg + 126kg), needed a strong showing in her preferred event to challenge for the podium.

Three failed lifts

However, the clean and jerk proved disastrous for the Indian racer. Nirupama, who started at 123kg, four kilograms below the 127kg she successfully lifted at the national championships earlier this year, failed to complete the lift in all three attempts. Without a successful lift in the clean and jerk, she failed to post a total and ended her campaign without placing, although she remained in medal contention after the catch.Maude Charron rewrites the record books While Nirupama suffered a disappointment, Canada’s Maude Charron once again underlined her dominance in the weight category. The Olympic champion from Tokyo broke Commonwealth Games records in both events as she lifted 102kg in the clean and 130kg in the throw to finish with a record total of 232kg to win her third Commonwealth Games gold medal in a row.England’s Sarah Davies Smale took the silver medal with 217kg (95kg + 122kg), while 17-year-old Femily-Crystie Notte of Nauru claimed bronze with 216kg (100kg + 116kg).Despite Nirupama’s departure, weightlifting remained India’s most prominent sport at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Six of the country’s 10 medals so far have come from weightlifting.
