Karnataka Central University Registrar RR Biradar emphasized that the real asset of any nation is its healthy citizens and not material possessions.
He was delivering a special lecture on ‘Instant Beverages for Healthy Lifestyle’ organized by the Department of Commerce, Central University of Karnataka here on Tuesday.
Professor Biradar said that increasing lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer and heart disease pose serious challenges to India.
“India is the second worst affected country after China in terms of diabetes prevalence. Almost 17% of our adult population has diabetes, compared to the global average of 11%. One in six Indians has diabetes,” he said, expressing concern over the rising lifetime risk of cancer, estimated at 11%, and the rising incidence of heart attacks among young adults.
“These diseases are largely the result of lifestyle changes – consumption of junk food, processed fast food and lack of physical exercise and stress management. We must prioritize our health by choosing a balanced diet, fruits and vegetables and adopting regular physical activities such as yoga, meditation and walking. If we do not treat food as medicine today, we may be forced to take medicine as food in the future,” he warned.
Speaking during a special lecture, Anilkumar Kadadi, Founder and Director, Buyu Food Private Limited, Kalaburagi, said that most of the commercially available soft drinks and beverages contain high amounts of sugar, preservatives and very little fruit content.
“Many consumers cannot differentiate between real fruit juices, carbonated drinks and ready-made products. To solve this problem, we have developed a range of healthy drinks and powders made from natural fruits, vegetables and leaves,” he said, adding that the company produces 41 items, including baobab powder, rosella powder, moringa powder, curry leaf powder, SSAI papaya leaf powder and various natural of juices and ISO certified juices and back.
Panduranga V. Patti, Komal, Mallikarjun, MS Pasodi, GR Angadi, Devarajappa, Ranganath, Zoahir, PS Kattimani and other faculty members and students were present.
