Head Warden, Two Wardens Arrested for Death of Remand Prisoner in Nagercoil Jail

Police on Tuesday (July 14, 2026) arrested the head warden and two wardens of Nagercoil Jail after a remand prisoner died under suspicious circumstances there on July 12, 2026.

Sabari Varman, 34, an otherwise able-bodied resident of Eeththankaad near Suchindram, was arrested on July 9, 2026 for allegedly possessing banned gutka and remanded in custody. With the support of several outfits, his family refused to accept his body and his wife demanded a proper investigation.

Police Superintendent Stalin went to the prison and conducted an investigation. He interviewed the warden and other prison officials. He assured the protesters that action would be taken based on the post-mortem report and the findings of his investigation.

Subsequently, Judicial Magistrate Sathyamurthy conducted an inquiry. An autopsy revealed that the victim had sustained multiple injuries. In this connection, Head Warden Jegan (47) and Wardens Sivakumar and Thiruvudai Nambi were picked up for investigation and then arrested.
