The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday (February 4) issued a notice to the Bar Council of India and the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh (BCAP) in a plea filed by advocate Thota Sunitha for 33% reservation for women lawyers in elections to all District Bar Associations (DBAs) in the state.
In her plea, which was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur and Justice Chall Gunaranjan, Ms Sunitha said the court should issue directions to the BCAP to provide the 33% quota by exercising its statutory powers under Section 3 of the Advocates Act, 1961.
She pointed out to the court that there are more than 12,000 women advocates in the state who need reservation to be elected as office bearers and executive members in the DBA.
Ms. Sunitha appeared in person and pleaded that the court should either fix the 33% reservation or direct that model bye-laws containing the provision for 1/3 (33%) quota be prepared and the same adopted by the DBA and other local Bar Associations.
