HC expresses concern over alleged ill-treatment of medical students

The Kerala High Court has verbally expressed concern over complaints of alleged ill-treatment of students in medical colleges in the state.

The court was hearing an anticipatory bail plea filed by MK Ram, former head of the anatomy department at Kannur Medical College, in a case registered against him following the alleged suicide of a BDS student in April.

Dr. Ram was indicted as the main accused in the case related to the death of Nithin Raj, a first-year student of BDS at a private management college in Anjarakandy, Kannur. He was found dead in the campus on April 10 after allegedly being harassed on the basis of his caste and skin.

The prosecution opposed the bail application and said that the trial court had denied bail to Dr. Ram based on the statement of the classmates of the deceased student.

The High Court then verbally observed that the government should take cognizance of what is happening in medical colleges. Many did not even disclose such incidents. A committee could be constituted to get a report on such incidents and formulate remedial measures and guidelines, it said.

Dr. Ram, who was dismissed from service after the student’s death, approached the court seeking anticipatory bail after the Kannur district court and the high court rejected his plea. The court granted bail to co-accused Sangeetha Nambiar, an associate professor at the college.

The matter was brought up for hearing on Monday.
