On Tuesday, the Kerala High Court expanded the temporary suspension of the toll collection in Paliyekkar to 9 September.
It also ordered a new operation on the section in the Edapally-Paliyekkar NH-544 corridor, which witnessed a 12-hour traffic mandate at the beginning of this month.
The court suspended toll collection on the corridor after it was filed by many petitions that demanded that the Indian National Highway (Nhai) take steps to streamline the flow around the overpass and underpass at the workplace.
The claim that traffic jams were still a problem, the divisional bench of justice A. Muhammed Mustaque and the justice Harisankar V. Menon ordered the district collector Thrissur and the interim Committee for Transport Management to carry out a new corridor inspection within two weeks.
The Committee stated that the only permanent solution for traffic growth was systematic repairs and strengthening of service roads and their expansion whenever possible.
The Nhai advisor stated that substantial corrective measures have already been taken in narrow places, leading to a smoother traffic movement. He called on the court to allow a new inspection with the participation of Nhai and asked to be considered during the holiday period of the court for cancellation of a toll collection.
The court stopped the toll collection on the corridor after the Minister KPCC Shaji Kodankanrath, President of Thrissur DCC Joseph Tajet, and the leader of the OJ Youth Congress applied for a toll collection until a reliable solution for transport to NH-544 in Thrissur was found.
The Supreme Court later confirmed the court, which excluded the collection of tolls for four weeks.
