On Tuesday, June 10, the divisional bench of the High Court was ordered by the Ernakulm district collector to convene a meeting of the clerks of the irrigation department and Chelllanam Panchayat and decided to accelerate the location of the geobags along the Chelllanam coast.
The bench issued an order for two written petitions filed by several inhabitants of Chelllanam.
When the petitions were admitted to hearing, the government dropped that the location of the geobags began last Saturday (June 7, 2025). The supplier who submitted the offer with the lowest offer was asked to start a job waiting to complete the offer with regard to the urgent need to complete the work.
The court noted that the estimate showed that the completion of the location of the geobags would take four months. In addition, it is not clear how the supplier does work during the monsoon, whether manually or with machines. It was clear that if the current situation continued, no immediate short -term measures such as the location of the geobags could be taken. “Let the district collector explore the short -term measures and placement of geobags on an immediate basis and how the Office for the Cand of Disasasters can speed up work,” the court said.
Consultant for Chelllanam Panchayat said that if the supplier started working with the current resources this month, it would take seven months to complete the work. Therefore, urgent measures should be taken to deploy multiple machines. Several houses were flooded due to lack of protection against sea erosion. Geobags located previously in areas such as Cherivakadava and Kattiparamab were washed away from the 24 to 30 May. About 500 houses were repeatedly flooded during these days and approximately 25 houses suffered partial damage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to place geobags in multiple areas.
