Former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president MM Hassan has welcomed the Kerala High Court’s decision allowing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the Sabarimala gold theft case.
Addressing mediators here on Wednesday, Mr. Hassan said the involvement of the ED could lead to a more comprehensive investigation.
“I hope we can expect a more thorough investigation if the ED probes the case. The agency has come forward to consider the suspected links between the Sabarimala gold theft and international idol smuggling. Once the ED investigates, more Marxist leaders are likely to end up in jail. The role of the CPI(M) in the gold heist will also come to light,” he said.
Referring to CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan’s remark that the ED notice in the Masala Bond case was worth no more than the paper it was printed on, Mr Hassan said the comment only confirmed what Congress leaders had been saying.
“The ED announcement during the last Lok Sabha elections – especially in the Karuvannur bank scam case – benefited the BJP politically. A similar attempt is happening now. In the Masala Bond case, land worth ₹ 466 crore was purchased in violation of norms. But the ED is showing no willingness to investigate. That’s why we call it Mr. election gimmick.”
To a question from Rahul Mamkootathil, Mr. Hassan said that the KPCC president has already clarified the party’s stand. “The party has taken strong action. This is the first time that KPCC has received such a complaint and it has been referred to the DGP. If Mr. Mamkootathil was in the organizational structure of the party, an internal investigation could have been done. Since he is not, we have handed it over to the police considering the seriousness of the complaint. Further action will be based on the court’s directions,” he said.
