Has Yashasvi Jaiswal done enough to earn an England ODI invite? Shubman Gill reveals

Shubman Gill weighed in on whether Yashasvi Jaiswal had done enough to earn a place in India’s ODI squad for the England series after his performances against Afghanistan.

Jaiswal returned to the ODI line-up after about six months, coming in after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the series with a hamstring injury.

Jaiswal had a mixed performance in the series, getting out cheaply in the second ODI before bouncing back strongly in the third. He hit an unbeaten 110 in Chepaukhelped India secure a dominant nine-wicket win to complete the series 3–0.

Commenting on Jaiswal’s prospects, Gill said the player’s fitness will be a key factor in the selection decision. He also noted that great performances across the team have made the team management happy when it comes to finalizing the combinations for England’s ODIs.

“We’ll see how everyone’s fit. If they’re all fit, like I said, the squad will be announced and we’ll try to pick the best XI possible based on that,” Gill told the post-match press conference.

“It’s a good kind of headache when all your players are performing. I think the squad will be announced either tomorrow or in the next few days. We’ll see who’s in the squad and then try to put the best possible England XI,” Gill said.

“We all know he’s a phenomenal player. It’s not easy for any player because when everyone is available, unfortunately he’s the one who’s missing sometimes.

“Since Virat bhai was not available in this series, he got a chance to play a few games and he played really well today. Hopefully he will continue this form and grab the opportunities he gets,” added Gill.

HOW YASHASVI JAISWAL ILLUMINATED CHEPAUK

Opening the bat alongside Rohit Sharma, he was part of a dominant 170-run partnership that completely blunted Afghanistan’s attack and laid the foundation for a comfortable victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Jaiswal started with positive intent, settled into rhythm quickly and bowled loose deliveries with authority. He brought up his half-century off just 38 balls, underscoring his aggressive approach at the top of the order. As the innings progressed, he effectively balanced risk and control, alternating strikes while continuing to search for boundaries at regular intervals.

He reached his second ODI hundred off 83 balls, a milestone he celebrated with visible emotion after dancing down the track to Mohammad Nabi and blasting the ball over extra cover.

His innings included a smooth combination of ground strokes and clean strokes against both pace and spin. Jaiswal finished in style, hitting a towering six to seal the chase, capping off a commanding performance in India’s series win.
