GURUGRAM:
In an effort to strengthen food and drug safety systems, the Haryana government has approved ₹53.21 crore to upgrade regulatory infrastructure in the National Capital Region, including deployment of 28 mobile food testing laboratories (MFTL) vans and modernization of the District Food Laboratory at Karnal.
Sumita Misra, Additional Principal Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said this initiative is a step towards providing faster, scientific and affordable food testing services to citizens.
Five MFTL vans provided by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are already operational across the districts, offering on-site food testing at a nominal cost of ₹20 per sample. The addition of 28 new vans in NCR areas will significantly expand the reach and access of citizens.
Haryana currently has two notified food testing laboratories in Chandigarh and Karnal, both accredited by NABL and recognized by FSSAI under Section 43(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Recognizing that milk and milk products form a major component of the state’s diet – and that Haryana is a leading hub for sportsmen involved in food testing – the eight states established in Misra’s state will ensure high quality food across the state.
Ms. Misra further informed that four cities namely Ambala, Karnal, Hisar and Gurugram have been selected for Clean Street Food Hubs to promote hygienic street food culture. In Ambala, a Street Food Hub for 60 shops is being developed at Gandhi Ground, Ambala Cantt and is expected to be completed by February 2026.
Hisar has completed around 60% of the work and aims to complete the project by the end of the current financial year. In Karnal, land near the West Yamuna canal at Vishwakarma Chowk has been identified and a detailed project report has been approved and is scheduled for completion by 2026-27. In Gurugram, the project is in the tender stage.
