Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has hit back at their critics after their historic World Cup triumph. India etched their name in the history books after winning their maiden World Cup title on home soil, defeating South Africa in the final at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
However, the road to victory was far from smooth sailing for the Women in Blue as they faced heavy criticism after three straight defeats midway through the tournament. As India proved their detractors wrong by making a comeback for the ages, Harmanpreet had a graceful response to their critics as she called it a part of life.
She acknowledged that the team understands that backlash is justified after poor performances.
“Well, I think that’s part of life too. It’s not necessary for everything to be good. Criticism is also one of the main things in life because it brings balance. Otherwise, when things go well, you’ll be overconfident. I don’t blame those who criticize because we know we’re not doing something right. I don’t have much to say, but I’d like to keep both things in balance in the Harmanprech presentation.
Apart from that, the Indian captain mentioned that she would never let the results on the field rule her emotions.
“When good things happen, I don’t get too high; when bad things happen, I don’t dig deep. The most important thing for me is to keep things balanced and I try to send the same message to my teammates. When things are going well — it’s fine, fine, fine, but now we have to keep it up. And even when things aren’t going well, we try to keep that person together so we can keep our heads up.
India put on a clinical show in the second half of the tournament as they rose above their criticism and they recorded crucial wins against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa to register their first triumph. Shafali Verma was named man of the match for scoring 87 (78) and taking two wickets (2/36). On the other hand, Deepti Sharma was declared the player of the tournament for scoring 215 runs and 22 wickets.
