Former England cricketer Stuart Broad has warned that Hardik Pandya poses a significant threat in the upcoming T20 World Cup semi-final. An all-round aura and confidence, Broad warned, could push India over the line if India laid a solid foundation.
Široká explained why when it was up for a place in the final Pandya could prove to be more of a problem than anticipated. He argued that a strong Indian start would allow the all-rounder to come in without pressure and play with complete freedom.
HOW CAN HARDIK PANDYA BE STOPPED?
The former pacer believes engineering Pandya’s early arrival at the crease could be England’s best chance of containing him. Široká suggested that getting the all-rounder in before he settles into his strike zone would give pitchers a better chance to dismiss him cheaply.
“If I’m an England bowler, I think I’ve got to get him in after 12 overs to play the ball when he’s not in the strike zone straight away. I’d see that as my chance to get him out before he can hurt me in the last four overs,” Broad said on the For the Love of Cricket podcast.
“If India are just three or four down and they go into lethal runs, then India get past 200 and you are in a bit of trouble,” he added.
Broad was equally enthusiastic in his assessment of Pandya’s mentality, emphasizing how difficult it is to plan for the all-rounder.
“If India set a good first ten overs, Hardik Pandya becomes a huge danger. When he comes in, he is extremely confident. He has an aura about him and an ego about him in a positive way. He just believes he can do the job,” Broad said.
“He’s so wiry and lean that you wonder how he can hit the ball 100 meters like he does. But he does it so effortlessly,” he added.
RECORD HARDIK PANDYA Vs. ENGLAND IN T20Is
India’s opening partnership has been a concern throughout the tournament. However, the return of Sanju Samson has given a much-needed boost to the top of the order. Pandya quickly capitalized as shown in he must win the match against Zimbabwe where he hit an unbeaten fifty to create a defensible total.
The numbers further support Broad’s concern. Against England, Pandya scored 414 runs in 20 matches at an average of 29.57 and a strike rate of 148.38. With the ball, he took 19 wickets in the same matches at an average of 24.78 and an economy of 8.26.
Those numbers make him a real match-winner in both departments, and one England will need to plan carefully.
England, meanwhile, grew into the tournament with every passing match. Harry Brook’s promotion to No.3 proved to be a masterstroke and the skipper showed why he is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world.
The question now is whether India can go one step further and become the first team in history to defend the T20 World Cup title.
