US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (July 2) announced a new proposal aimed at stopping almost 21 months of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and outlined the 60 -day ceasefire and interviews to end the conflict. While Israel signaled support for some aspects of the plan, Hamas stopped to accept it directly and insists that any agreement must guarantee the complete end of the war.
Trump’s proposal
President Trump said that Israel agreed to the necessary conditions for a 60 -day ceasefire in Gaza.
During this pause, hostage, partial Israeli withdrawal and increase humanitarian aid would be exchanged.
Trump stressed that the period will be used to work at the lasting end of the war and the Hamas warning:
“I hope that for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas will take this agreement because it will not improve – that is just getting worse.”
The President added that the agreement could be completed next week and dependent on Hamas’s agreement.
Israel’s reaction
Israeli officials did not publicly comment on Trump’s announcement. Privately, as the AP states, an Israeli official who speaks anonymously confirmed that the proposal includes:
- Partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza.
- Essential humanitarian relief.
- No commitment to the Israeli commitment to end the war within this phase.
- Continuation of the insistence that Hamas must eventually give up, disarm and leave Gaza in front of any permanent ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled for Washington next week for interviews with Trump and higher American officials.
Hamas’s answer
In Wednesday, Hamas indicated that he was open to negotiations, but would not accept any agreement that would stop completely ending the war.
Hamas spokesman Taker al-Nuna said, “We are ready and serious about achieving an agreement … ready to accept any initiative that clearly leads to the complete end of the war.”
The Hamas delegation is ready to meet the Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Cairo to further discuss this proposal.
Hamas continues to require:
- Complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
- Permanent end of military operations.
- Relaxing hostages in exchange for concessions.
The position of the group has long been that any ceasefire must lead to a complete cessation of the conflict, the condition of Israel rejects the condition.
Bonding point: End of war
The fate of the proposal remains uncertain.
The previous ceasefire negotiations have repeatedly collapsed on whether the war should end as part of any agreement.
Trump considers this moment a possible breakthrough, but acknowledged that time is running to avert a deeper humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the upcoming visit of Netanyah in Washington is expected to include security discussions about Gaz and regional threats from Iran.
