The Spanish city of Terrassa in Catalonia has temporarily stopped the adoption of black cats. Precautions have been taken to prevent damage or misuse during Halloween 2025.
From October 6th to November 10th, local shelters will refuse applications to adopt or breed black cats. It is a safety measure against possible “rituals” or cruelty, the BBC said.
According to Deputy Mayor Noel Duque, such requests spike around Halloween. Although no local cases of abuse have been found, animal groups have warned of incidents elsewhere.
“We’re trying to prevent people from adopting because it’s trendy or impulsive. And in cases like these, which we know exist, to prevent any horrific practices,” the BBC quoted Duque as saying.
Terrassa is home to more than 9,800 cats. She has about 100 at her adoption center, including 12 black ones. According to authorities, the Halloween 2025 adoption ban is temporary. It is a preventive step for animal welfare.
However, the city may do it again in the future. Exceptions will be assessed on an individual basis and regular adoptions will resume after the festival. The decision favors the protection of animals over superstition.
When is Halloween 2025?
Halloween 2025 will be celebrated on October 31st. This year it falls on a Friday.
